By clue 1, no two readers ended up simply exchanging Michael Connelly books.
By clue 5, four of the traders are Faith, Ms. Haller, and the ones who started
with and ended up with City of Bones. By clue 7, the woman who finished
with The Poet never had City of Bones at all, so she isn't Faith
or Ms. Haller (5); she is the fifth reader to the four in clue 5. If the one
who acquired The Poet did not start with The Lincoln Lawyer, then
by clue 5, the readers who brought The Lincoln Lawyer and City of
Bones would have simply exchanged books, since Faith and Ms. Haller neither
brought nor went home with those two novels--a contradiction with clue 1. So,
the fan who ended up with The Poet started with The Lincoln Lawyer.
By clue 5, then, the woman who started with City of Bones ended up with
The Lincoln Lawyer. The reader who finished with City of Bones
didn't bring The Poet to swap, or Faith and Ms. Haller would have simply
exchanged books, contradicting clue 1. Therefore, since Ms. McCaleb got Beth's
novel through the trading (clue 4) and since Beth isn't Ms. Haller (11) and Ms.
McCaleb isn't Faith (6), Beth started with The Lincoln Lawyer or with City
of Bones. If Beth had started with City of Bones and Ms. McCaleb
ended with that Michael Connelly novel, by clue 9, Anne would have traded away
The Lincoln Lawyer and gotten The Poet. Then by clue 2, Ms.
Rider would be Beth--no (11). Therefore, Beth started the trading with
The Lincoln Lawyer and acquired The Poet, while Ms. McCaleb
got The Lincoln Lawyer and gave away City of Bones (4). By clue 2,
Ms. Rider got the novel Anne brought. Anne isn't Ms. Haller (9). If she had
gotten City of Bones in the trading, Ms. Rider would have to be Faith.
But there is no way with this arrangement for Ms. Bosch to have gotten Ms.
Walling's novel (10) unless Faith and Ms. Haller simply traded books. Anne
is Ms. McCaleb, and Ms. Rider went home with City of Bones. Ms.
Haller got Blood Work or The Narrows and thus can't be Pam (8),
who is Ms. Rider; Ms. Haller is Jane. Since Ms. Bosch ended up with Ms.
Walling's book (10), Beth must be Ms. Bosch and Faith Walling brought The Poet.
Faith Walling did not get Blood Work (3), so Jane did; and Faith went
home with The Narrows. Finally, then, Jane started with The Narrows
and Pam Rider with Blood Work. The five fans thus started with and ended
up with Michael Connelly novels as follows:
- Anne McCaleb, City of Bones - The Lincoln Lawyer
- Beth Bosch, The Lincoln Lawyer - The Poet
- Faith Walling, The Poet - The Narrows
- Jane Haller, The Narrows - Blood Work
- Pam Rider, Blood Work - City of Bones
