From the introduction, couples from four different clubs reached the final
two rounds of the tournament. By clue 2, the Simpsons defeated the couple
who play at White Oak Tennis Club, while Lance and his wife overcame Beth
and her husband. By clue 6, the Roddicks defeated Debbie and her husband,
and Kevin and his wife beat the couple representing Fair Hills. The two
final rounds must be described in the clues rather than the same round,
since Lance Roddick (the Roddicks can't be the Simpsons) couldn't defeat
both Beth and her husband and Debbie and hers in the same round. So,
the matches in clue 2 are the finals and those in clue 6 the semifinals,
or vice versa. Trying the matches in clue 6 as the semifinals, then the
Roddicks would have faced Kevin and his wife and the couple from Fair Hills
would have played Debbie and her husband in the final round. Combining
the matches in clue 2 into the final round, since the Simpsons don't belong
to Fair Hills (5), Mr. Simpson would be Kevin and he and his wife would have
won over the Roddicks from White Oak in the championship match. Also from
clue 2, then, Lance would be Debbie's husband, and they would have defeated
the Fair Oaks couple, Debbie and her spouse, for 3rd place. By clue 1, Erin
would be Mrs. Roddick and Lance and Debbie would be the Eden Fields couple.
By elimination Mrs. Simpson would be Gina and play at Swan Lake--no (clue 4).
So, the matches in clue 2 are not the finals; they are the semifinals, with the
clue 6 matches the finals. By clue 2, the Simpsons and Lance and his wife won to
reach the championship match, while the couple from White Oak and Beth and her
husband squared off for 3rd place. By clue 6, Kevin is either Mr. Simpson
or plays at White Oak Tennis Club. If Kevin were Mr. Simpson, he and his
wife would have defeated the couple from Fair Hills, Lance and his wife,
in the title match, while Beth Roddick and her husband would have taken
the consolation match from Debbie and her husband. By clue 3, the Talberts
defeated Ian and his wife in one match; Mr. Talbert would be Lance, with
Ian Mr. Roddick. By clue 1, Erin and her husband beat the couple from Eden
Fields in a match; Erin would be Mrs. Talbert and the couple from Eden
Fields would be Ian and Beth Roddick. By elimination, Gina and Kevin
Simpson would play at Swan lake Tennis Club--no (4). By clue 6, then,
Kevin isn't Mr. Simpson and plays at White Oak. Kevin and his wife defeated
the couple from Fair Hills, Beth and her spouse, for 3rd place. By clue 6
also, Lance Roddick and his wife won the championship over Debbie Simpson
and her husband. By clue 3, Kevin and his wife are the Talberts, and Ian
and Beth are a couple--by elimination, the Walkers. Also by elimination,
Mr. Simpson is Nick. By clue 1, Erin is Mrs. Roddick, and the Simpsons
play tennis at the Eden Fields club. By elimination, Gina is Mrs. Talbert,
and the Roddicks play at Swan Lake. In sum, the semifinals and then finals
of the Summerset County Couples Tennis Tournament are as follows:
- Semifinals:
- Nick & Debbie Simpson, Eden Fields, def. Kevin & Gina Talbert, White Oak
- Lance & Erin Roddick, Swan Lake, def. Ian & Beth Walker, Fair Hills
- Finals:
- Championship:
- Lance & Erin Roddick, Swan Lake, def. Nick & Debbie Simpson, Eden Fields
- Consolation:
- Kevin & Gina Talbert, White Oak def. Ian & Beth Walker, Fair Hills
