From the introduction, the first four who auditioned to be Vlad's court jester
were rejected with finality, and the fifth got the job. By clue 1, Jack was
either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd to try out for the king. If Jack had been 1st to
audition, the fool who did magic tricks would have been 2nd. Since Jack
wasn't the juggler (clue 7), by clue 5, the juggler would have been 3rd to
audition and the 4th candidate would have been drawn and quartered. By
clue 2, then, the fool who tumbled would have gotten the job as court
jester--no (6). If Jack had been 2nd to audition for King Vlad, the fool
who did magic tricks would have been 3rd. Since Jack wasn't the juggler (7),
by clue 5, the juggler would have been 1st to audition and Jack would have
been drawn and quartered--a conflict with clue 7. Therefore, Jack was the
3rd fool to audition, with the fool who did magic tricks then 4th (1).
Since Jack wasn't the juggler and wasn't drawn and quartered (7), by clue 5,
the juggler was 1st to try out and meet his fate, and the 2nd fool ended up
drawn and quartered. By clue 6, Jack tumbled and Weems did magic tricks
for the king. By clue 3, Ranulf was 1st to audition for the job. Scarletto
was 2nd (4), and Pippin then 5th and becoming court jester. Scarletto
played the flute and Pippin sang for the king (8). Since Weems wasn't the
one King Vlad had drowned (9), Jack was (4). Finally by clue 10, Ranulf
the juggler was beheaded and Weems was boiled in oil. In sum, the five fools
auditioned to become King Vlad's court jester in the following order 1st-5th:
- Ranulf the juggler, beheaded
- Scarletto the flute player, drawn and quartered
- Jack the tumbler, drowned
- Weems the magician, boiled in oil
- Pippin the singer, court jester (until the next week)
