Three of the new Knights of Salta are Sir Robert, Ford, and the novelist
(clue 9). By clue 2, Sir Thomas Plant is the fourth to these three. Carver
isn't Sir Robert (1) or the novelist (6) and is the fifth to the four named
above. Neither Carver nor Ford is Sir William (4), who must be the novelist.
By clue 5, Sir John is a noted philanthropist; he is either Ford or Carver.
If Sir John were Ford, Sir George would be Carver. Sir George isn't the
inventor (8); nor since Sir Robert is Beckham or Majors, would Sir Robert
be (3). Sir Thomas Plant would be the inventor. However, neither Sir Robert
nor Carver is the soccer player (1); so this arrangement cannot work.
Philanthropist Sir John is Carver; and Sir George is Ford. Sir George isn't
the inventor (8); nor since Sir Robert is Beckham or Majors, is Sir Robert (3).
Sir Thomas Plant is the inventor. By clue 1, Sir George is the soccer player
and Sir Robert the actor. Sir Robert is Majors and Sir William Beckham (7).
In sum, Queen Bea knighted the following five new Sirs:
- Sir George Ford, soccer player
- Sir John Carver, philanthropist
- Sir Robert Majors, actor
- Sir Thomas Plant, inventor
- Sir William Beckham, novelist
