| From the introduction, Sunset Apts. is a 3-story building with apartments
1A, 2A, and 3A on the south and 1B, 2B, and 3B on the north side of the
building. By clue 2, Martha's apartment is 1 floor directly above Johnson's;
while by clue 5, Alex's apartment is 1 floor directly above that of the person who
gave the trick-or-treaters Nestles Crunch bars. Since Martha didn't give out
Nestles Crunch bars (clue 12) and Alex isn't Johnson (9), the residents in the
two clues must live on different sides of the building, with Martha and Alex
on the 2nd or 3rd floor of the different sides. By clue 3, the person who
gave out Snickers bars lives 1 floor directly above Carrie. No matter whether
Alex lives on the 3rd or 2nd floor, he only way Carrie can live on the same
side of the building as Alex is if Alex gave away Snickers bars--no (9). So,
the two residents in clue 3 live on the same side of the building as Martha.
By clue 8, the resident who gave out Baby Ruths lives 1 floor directly above
Ben. No matter whether Alex lives on the 3rd or 2nd floor, the only way
Ben can live on the same side of the building as Alex is if Ben gave away
Nestles Crunches--no (12). So, the two residents in clue 8 also live on the
same side of the building as Martha. If Martha lived on the 2nd and Johnson
on the 1st floor (2), by clue 3, Martha would have handed out Snickers bars,
and Carrie would be Johnson. However, there is then no way for clue 8
to work. So, Martha lives on the 3rd and Johnson on the 2nd floor. If
Martha had given out Snickers bars and Carrie were Johnson (3), by clue 8,
Carrie would have handed out Baby Ruths--no (1). Therefore, in clue 3,
Johnson gave away Snickers bars; and Carrie lives on the 1st floor.
By clue 8, Ben is Johnson, and Martha treated the trick-or-treaters to
Baby Ruth candy bars. On the other side of the building, if Alex lived on
the 2nd floor and the resident who handed out Nestles Crunch bars lived on
the 1st floor (5), there would be no way for clue 10 to fit. So, Alex lives
on the 3rd floor and the resident who handed out Nestles Crunch bars lives on
the 2nd floor. By clue 10, Rachel lives under them on the 1st floor and
handed out Butterfingers on Trick-or-Treat Night. By elimination, Lou
gave out the Nestles Crunches. By clue 11, Lou must be Proctor and Rachel
Barrett. By clue 6, Martha is Vandross; and Alex handed out 3 Musketeers
candy. Carrie gave away Milky Ways. Carrie is Tanner and Alex Wheeler (4).
By clue 7, Carrie Tanner lives in 1A, with Ben then in 2A, Martha in 3A,
Rachel in 1B, Lou in 2B, and Alex in 3B. In sum the residents of Sunset Apts.
welcomed trick-or-treaters as follows:
- 3A - Martha Vandross, Baby Ruth / 3B - Alex Wheeler, 3 Musketeers
- 2A - Ben Johnson, Snickers / 2B - Lou Proctor, Nestles Crunch
- 1A - Carrie Tanner, Milky Way / 1B - Rachel Barrett, Butterfinger
